NDT on Shafts

Image
Non Destructive Testing,NDT on Shafts is considered essential , because the shafts are mostly made as load bearing structures, any defects such as cracks will propagate more during acting of load and eventually will cause failure. The most possible defects in shafts are Cracks and Pipes , which is shown below The Non Destructive methods preferred for defect detection on raw material shafts are Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic Particle testing / Eddy Current Testing / Magnetic Flux Leakage method. We have not discussed about other NDT methods such as Liquid Penetrant testing & Radiographic testing because for raw material inspection. These methods will be cost effective for raw material testing  ( i.e. most costly and labor intensive, also there is possibility of missing out the cracks in radiography testing due to orientation of crack ) The Defect wise identification method is given as below  , Internal Defect ( Piping ) – Ultrasonic Testing Surface Defects  (C rac...

NDT Methods Selection

Image
NDT Method Selection: The NDT (nondestructive testing) methods are:   Visual Inspection – VT Liquid Penetrant Testing – LT Magnetic Particle Testing – MT Radiographic Testing – RT Ultrasonic Testing – UT Eddy Current Testing – ET (not used in field inspection) Acoustic Emission Testing – AET (not used in field inspection) Phased Array Ultrasonics – PA Time Of Flight Diffraction  –  TOFD Since each NDT methods has its own set of advantages and disadvantages and some are better suited than others for a particular application, the NDT technician or engineer  must select the method  that will detect the defect or make the measurement with the  highest sensitivity and reliability . The cost effectiveness of the technique must also be taken into consideration. The following table provides some  guidance  in the selection of NDT methods for common flaw detection and measurement applications. AQC (Advanced Quality Centre) is an ISO 9001:2015 certif...

Acceptance Criteria for Liquid Penetrant Testing -LPT

Image
Acceptance Criteria for Liquid Penetrant Testing -LPT as per ASME , AWS and API standards Liquid penetrant testing  simply called as PT. Sometimes Dye Penetrant Testing is a surface defect detection NDT  method and is more sensitive to all kind of surface defects, such as cracks , porosity, hot tears, laps, etc. The NDT methods are trained by NDT Training Institutes with their NDT courses, and the LPT is one among the basic Non Destructive Testing Methods. Various international standards for Liquid Penetrant Testing are as below ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code BPVC- Section V – Article 6 and Article 24 ASTM E-1417 (ASTM Standard) ASTM E-165 (Penetrant Testing Standard for general Industry ASTM Standard) ISO 3452-1 (ISO Standard) SAE AMS 2644 (Aerospace Standard) AS 2062 (Australian Standard ) DIN EN 571 The Indications are evaluated as per Clients Acceptance Criteria or the Product Standard in conformance with the clients acknowledgement . Few examples of product s...

What is Acoustic emission testing?

Image
ACOUSTIC EMISSION TESTING (AET) Acoustic Emission Test is a type of Non – Destructive Test method generally used for detecting and locating imperfections in mechanically loaded structures or components. Flaw origination and progression in a stressed component can be identified by acoustic emission test method. This can be done when the component is subjected to repetitive or continuous stress.   PRINCIPLE OF ACOUSTIC EMISSION TESTING AET: When a component with discontinuities is subjected to mechanical load or stress it releases energy. This energy travels in the form of high frequency stress waves. These waves or oscillations are received with the use of sensors which in turn converts the energy into voltage. This voltage is electronically amplified with the use of timing circuits and further processed as AE signal data. STAGES IN ACOUSTIC EMISSION TESTING (AET): External forces acting on a body; the resulting stress causes deformation wit...

Ultrasonic testing Couplants

Image
A study on the couplant effects in contact ultrasonic testing. The primary purpose of a couplant is to provide a suitable sound path between the transducer and the test surface.Ultrasonic Testing couplants usage can be seen here A couplant must effectively wet or totally contact both surfaces of the transducer and the test part. The couplant must exclude all air from between the surfaces as air is a very poor conductor of sound. The couplant fills in and smoots out irregularities on the surface of the part. The couplant aids in the movement of the transducer over the surface in contact testing. The practical couplant must be easy to apply and easy to remove. It must also be harmless to the part surfaces. How to Pick the Right Ultrasonic Couplant for Your Application? Oil or water mixed with Glycerin (2 parts water and 1 Part glycerin) are commonly used couplants. Even wallpaper paste has advantages as couplant. Heavier couplants, such as Grease or heavy Oil can be ...

Rebound Hammer Test-Non Destructive testing on Concrete

Image
Non destructive testing for concrete Non Destructive Testing is the process of detecting the quality without destructing the material or without changing its actual properties. Rebound Hammer is also called as Schmidt hammer or Swiss Hammer or Concrete hammer test. This NDT method is used to detect the strength of Concrete Slab or rock, by identifying the hardness or elastic property. Principle of Rebound Hammer Test. Schmidt’s hammer test is based on the principle of “rebound of a spring loaded mass depends on the hardness of the concrete mass on which the mass strikes”. This rebound distance of the rebounded Plunger mass is noted down in the graduated scale as Rebound number / rebound  index. The graph in the body of hammer is used to found out the respective compressive strength. The concrete with low energy and low stiffness absorbs more energy from plunger and produces a low rebound value on the scale. Objective of Hammer rebound test...

Procedure for Liquid Penetrant examination

Image
LIQUID PENETRANT EXAMINATION (PT) Pentrant Testing is surface defects detection method, the method can be used on any material ( i.e: Ferrous/ non-ferrous, conductive/ non conductive, metals/ non metals) But PT is limited to materials having porous surface or very rough surface. PT can be carried out on castings, raw material, machined faces and weld joints. It is more often used in Austenitic Stainless Steels, where MPI inspection is not practically possible.   Most standards insist that the penetrant materials used, should not contain contaminants that spoil the quality of weld and metals.( contaminants such as Sulphur, Chlorine & halogens )   Penetrant materials are mostly suitable for materials with surface temperature less than 52°C. Therefore the weld has to allowed to cool before carrying out PT test on it. Liquid penetrant testing principle Any PT inspection on elevated temperature (temperature other than 4°C to 52°C), should have special ...

What is eddy current testing in NDT?

Image
What is an Eddy Current? Eddy currents are currents that circulate in conductors like swirling eddies (a whirlpool) in a stream. They are induced by changing magnetic fields and flow in closed loops, perpendicular to the plane of the magnetic field. How is Eddy current used in Non-Destructive Testing? It is one of the electromagnetic methods of non-destructive testing. It is used for identifying surface and subsurface defects in conducting materials. Principle of Eddy Current Testing: Electromagnetic Induction is the basic principle of ECT. How is Eddy Current used for identifying a defect? When eddy current is induced to an object/material which is being tested, by varying the electromagnetic field alternatively, there will be a change in pattern of the current flow when a defect is present in an object.   Eddy Current Testing   Properties of Eddy Currents: They are induced in closed loops. They normally travel parallel to the coils windings. ...

Visual Testing in NDT (Non destructive testing)

Image
Visual Testing in NDT: Visual Inspection is method of visually inspecting the material for deciding the acceptablility of the material. Infact it is the very first inspection method in Non Destructive Testing methods. Sometimes the Visual Inspection is carried out with aid of additional Instruments and Devices such as Measurement tools & Vision aids. What are essentials for visual Inspection ? Human Eye Lighting Acceptance Criteria Measurement Devices Human Eye So in order to make sure the very essential instrument (EYE) is working properly , it is essential to investigate and make sure, it works properly. So a Visual Acuity Test is recommended Yearly, by most of the standards Visual Acuity commonly referred to as clarity of Vision. It is dependent upon optical and neural factors. i.e., (i) the sharpness of the retinal focus (ii) the health and functioning of retina (iii) the sensitivity of the interpretative faculty of the brain. Vi...

Radiography Testing procedure

Image
An Important principle of Radiography Testing procedure is How to arrange for Radiography Testing? Radiography is Non destructive testing method, which utilizes penetrating electromagnetic radiation for capturing the volumetric images of an object on film or digitally in a computer. Radiography testing broadly uses any of the two types of radiation X ray or Gamma Ray for this purpose. Gamma Ray Emitted from radio decaying isotopes. In this case radiation strength cannot be increased or decreased for purpose of inspection components of different material and different thickness. Instead only the expose time can be controlled. After  calculated exposure time, the radiation emitting source is sent back in to a shielded enclosure. X Rays are produced by a electrical system. In this case the strength of radiation can be controlled in relative to the component atomic number and thickness of material. Here we are going to see how to make the radiographic set up and ex...
